The Year in Car and Driver Magazine Covers

Car and Driver

Go ahead, judge our book by its covers. We had 10 of them in 2021, and on them we fit 24 cars and one sharp melon saver painted up like the cover of David Bowie’s Aladdin Sane. That one was for our Lightning Lap issue, get it? Also landing covers: a flying Ford Bronco, the entire group of winners from our annual 10Best stuffed in a vending machine, and a 4856-pound Ford Mustang.

Behind the flashy covers, readers found important and in-depth industry reporting and plenty of adventures. We covered spiking used-car prices, supply-chain mishaps, and our testing revealed a world of misleading promises or poorly executed ideas. We chased an old locomotive with a new 637-hp Audi e-tron GT, dug through the music playlists sound engineers use to tune new cars, and left Travis Pastrana’s daredevil playground without any broken bones.

Of the over 300 cars, trucks, SUVS, and vans on the market, few have the right grease to earn our annual 10Best award. No, this isn’t our top-secret test-car bunker, this 10Best tube belongs to used-car retailer Carvana. Kick one hard enough and a Red Bull Mini Cooper might drop.

April 2021

October 2021

It has been a decade since a Nissan Z made our cover. New Cars for 2022 is an exciting breakdown of what’s coming next year, including the $21,490 Ford Maverick compact pickup, the upcoming and opulent all-electric Mercedes-Benz EQS, and, of course, the long-anticipated arrival of a new 400-hp Nissan Z.
