Ubisoft did something Nintendo has always been too cowardly to do. They gave Mario a gun. Two to be exact! This crossover between Mario and the Rabbids plays as a tactical turn-based strategy game. Think X-Com except you control Mario’s friends and all the enemies are screaming “BAAAAAAGGHHH!!!” at you. Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope slipped under a lot of folks radar, but it’s the perfect game to kill time before your Nintendo Switch 2 delivers at the beginning of June. Best of all, the game is only $25 right now.
Fans have been waiting for this game their entire lives. Finally a Zelda game starring its titular character not as the damsel in distress but as the hero. In The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, it’s Link’s turn to be saved by Princess Zelda as you and her explore Hyrule with an all new gameplay mechanic. Zelda can use her wand to create echoes of almost anything in the enviroment from chairs to enemies which paves the way for some awesomely inventive puzzles and encounters. This four-player local multiplayer title is packed full of laugh after laugh. Join up with three friends to compete in a series of over 200 motion-based microgames that take just seconds to play. The microgames are all equally ridiculous and will test your reaction speed, not just to accomplish the task at hand but even just to process what the heck it’s even asking of you before the clock counts down to zero. Walmart now has WarioWare: Move It! for $14 off at just $35.
Luigi takes the center stage from his brother in the third entry to this scarefest. Explore the many towering floors of a haunted hotel, taking on ghosts and spectres of all shapes and sizes. Luigi’s Mansion 3 adds a wecolmed new co-op multiplayer experience in the form of Luigi’s new companion, Gooigi—a translucent blobby doppelganger made from green ooze. Walmart has the game for $11 off.
Playing through Super Mario Odyssey is mandatory reading for any Switch owner if you somehow missed out on it. Also, this 3D platformer will make a great primer before getting your hands on the Switch 2. It’s rumored that the team behind Super Mario Odyssey is who Nintendo had working on the new Donkey Kong Bananza. When you watch through the footage, that looks likely to be the case as the art style, movement, and collectible all feel like iterations off the formula introduced here back in 2017. Crash Bandicoot was a console mascot super star back in the day. He disappeared for awhile but he’s back and looking better than ever. You can experience his first three games in the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy which takes you through the beautifully remastered Crash Bandicoot, Crash Bandicoot 2, and Crash Bandicoot: Warped. It also adds Coco as playable character along with all new time trials across all three games. Get it for just $20.
Some complaints you might hear about Nintendo every so often is that its games are too easy. Well, Donkey Kong Country Returns and it’s sequel pack some much-welcomed challenge for sidescrolling fans when stacked against they’re Mario counterparts. Donkey Kong Country Returns HD brings back the 80 levels of this Wii title along with the extra levels from the 3DS version in glorious HD. Also this may very well be the last officially released Nitendo game to feature the old DK design we’ve come to know and love since the Rare days on the Super Nintendo. What a goregous looking game. Ever since New Super Mario Brothers for the Nintendo DS back in 2006, the artstyle of the 2D mario games has not been touched. Graphical fidelity got a bit better, but we’ve been playing withe pretty much the same assets for decades. That all changed with Super Mario Bros. Wonder which gives the characters a painterly aesthetic, and while they are all still 3D, the animators treat them like 2D with every key pose dynamically keeping the player’s view in mind. The art gets pushed even further with the titular new mechanic—wonder seeds—which warp each level with mindbending effects. You can grab the game for $15 off.
Mario RPG fans ate good in the back half of the Nintendo Switch’s lifecycle. Among a remaster of arguably the best Paper Mario game and a new entry in the Mario & Luigi series, we also got a remake of the game that kicked it all off. Super Mario RPG was originally made for the Super Nintendo by Square (now Squre Enix) as Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars which was really Nintendo fans first look at a lived-in Mushroom Kingdom, seeing just how this world operates. The game is also fun as heck. You can get it for a whopping $26 off.
The GameCube, PS2, Original Xbox era had what felt like an endless stream of licensed games—most of which were slop. However, there were a handful of diamonds in the rough and the gem that shined brightest of that generation was Spongebob Squarepants: Battle for Bikini Bottom. This cult-classic 3D platformer has you playing as SpongeBob, Patrick, and Sandy to thwart Plankton’s evil plans. The remake adds in a brand new horde multriplayer mode as well as cut content from the original game like a Robo Squidward bosss fight. The game is now only $20.
2024 was the year of Shadow the Hedgehog. We got to see him voiced by Keanu Reeves on the big screen and we also got a brand new expansion to Sonic Generations. Sonic X Shadow Generations includes the original game with updated visuals and reworked cinematics along with brand new levels built around everyone’s favorite red and black edgelord. Play through a combination of beautifully designed 2D and 3D stages and rescue every Chao hiding in each level. The game is now going for $15 off.
I’m an old-timer so the original 151 Pokémon will always be my favorite. Nintendo remade Pokémon Red & Blue once before on the GameBoy Advance, but they’ve done it again with full 3D environments and battles. Bulbasaur, Squirtle, and Charmander take a backseat as the starters in place of Pikachu and Eevee. As the title implies, Pokemon: Let’s Go, Eevee! will have cute little Eevee joining you along for your adventure. If you’ve never played a Pokémon game before, this might work better than any other as your first. Get it for $12 off.
