High fuel-economy ratings and a low cost of entry make the 2022 Ford Maverick hybrid a pickup truck worth considering for casual drivers.

Given how expensive cars and trucks have gotten over the past few years and how much more gasoline costs right now, pickup-truck buyers feeling the pinch may find the Ford Maverick hybrid a welcome addition to the marketplace.

Our XLT test vehicle was well equipped with an optional sunroof, additional driver-assistance features, and a spray-in bedliner and still carried an affordable sticker price of $26,645.

Performance isn’t as eager as the nonhybrid model, which uses a turbocharged 250-hp 2.0-liter inline-four and is available with optional all-wheel drive.

The hybrid setup, which comprises a 2.5-liter inline-four paired with two electric motors, drives only the front wheels.

Our test vehicle managed a 7.7-second run to 60 mph, which isn’t terrible, but its breathless performance at highway speeds pales in comparison to the nonhybrid, which sprinted to 60 mph in just 5.9 seconds.

But fuel economy is where the hybrid shines, as the Maverick averaged 32 mpg in our hands and managed a 30-mpg result in our 75-mph highway fuel-economy test.

Downsizing (or downgrading, however you see it) to a Maverick hybrid from a larger pickup does require some compromises, but the 4.5-foot-long bed and 1500-pound payload capacity are still handy and will likely suit a large swath of buyers.

The Maverick’s cabin hides its cheapness well behind a veneer of nicely chosen plastic materials that look quite nice. Our test vehicle also benefited from the added pops of orange in the center console and door panels, which added a layer of personality.

Thoughtful design touches around the cabin are clearly meant to make life easier when hauling cargo, and with the rear seat folded up the Maverick is able to accommodate a bicycle inside.

Buyers who frequently tow trailers likely won’t find much reason to give the Maverick hybrid a chance as it can tow only up to 2000 pounds, but for those who don’t need more capability, Ford’s smallest truck is a fairly compelling package.
