Apple Will Allow Apps to Request Access to More RAM in iOS 15
Apple will allow apps to request access to more RAM in iOS 15.
The second beta of iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 was seeded to developers yesterday. It includes a new ‘com.apple.developer.kernel.increased-memory-limit’ entitlement that indicates whether an app will perform better with more memory.
Add this entitlement to your app to inform the system that some of your app’s core features may perform better by exceeding the default app memory limit on supported devices. If you use this entitlement, make sure your app still behaves correctly if additional memory isn’t available.
Apple says increased memory is only available on some device models, likely the new M1 iPad Pro with 16GB of RAM.
Call the os_proc_available_memory function to determine the amount of memory available. Higher memory use can affect system performance.
Last month, an app limitation of 5GB of RAM was spotted by Procreate users. With iOS 15, Procreate will have access to more RAM and thus be able to offer support for additional layers.
