2018 Subaru Impreza Review, Pricing, and Specs

Overview

Standard all-wheel drive, fantastic safety ratings, the choice of sedan and hatchback configurations, and a comprehensive suite of infotainment features make the compact Subaru Impreza a compelling choice. A handsome but subdued exterior style and a durable, businesslike cabin give the Impreza broad appeal, and its predictable, athletic chassis provides driving enjoyment. We just wish its engine made more power and were mated to a better transmission. Focusing on the equipment and the all-weather confidence, the Impreza is a car we’re happy to recommend, but it would still need an improved powertrain to achieve greatness.

What’s New for 2018?

After a comprehensive redesign last year, the Impreza sees one simple change for 2018: The headlamps on Premium, Sport, and Limited models now automatically illuminate if the windshield wipers are activated.

Pricing

Original MSRP:

  • Base: $19,355
  • Premium: $22,155
  • Sport: $22,955
  • Limited: $25,055

    Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The Impreza’s 2.0-liter flat-four produces 152 horses, but unfortunately, the stall doors don’t fully open until 6000 rpm, and the 145 lb-ft of torque peaks at a lofty 4000 rpm. With little low-end punch, the Impreza requires considerable goading to keep the engine in the heart of its powerband. The Impreza’s apathetic acceleration is exacerbated by the clunky feel and poor gearing of the standard five-speed manual gearbox or the annoying drone of the available continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). On the road, the Impreza strikes a near-perfect balance between ride and handling. It stays impressively flat and neutral through turns, and the rack-and-pinion steering system benefits from a quick ratio that gives the car an additional sense of verve.

      Fuel Economy

EPA fuel-economy testing and reporting procedures have changed over time. For the latest numbers on current and older vehicles, visit the EPA’s website and select Find & Compare Cars.

      Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The Impreza’s interior may be short on style, but it is tops in ergonomics with clear gauges, simple controls, and an intuitive climate-control system. Additionally, the Impreza’s cabin benefits from swaths of soft-touch plastics, cushy armrests, and impressive fit and finish. Upper trims and options add such niceties as heated leather-trimmed power seats, automatic climate control, and a variety of driver-assist features. The cargo holds of both the Impreza sedan and hatchback are on the smaller side of the class. Still, both body styles benefit from a standard 60/40 split-folding rear seat that allows for additional cargo room. Interior storage cubbies are limited to the door panels and center console.

      Infotainment and Connectivity

While base and Premium-level Imprezas feature a 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Sport and Limited models are equipped with a bigger 8.0-inch unit. Both systems boast logical menu structures and crisp graphics. Every Impreza includes key infotainment features such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. An in-dash navigation system is exclusive to the top-end Limited trim, bundled into a package that also includes a premium audio system, a sunroof, and a number of automated safety features.
