The Lotus Emira replaces the long-lived Evora and is set to be the final Lotus launched with an internal-combustion engine.

Two engines will be offered: a supercharged 3.5-liter V-6 using the same base motor as the Evora, but now making peaks of 400 horsepower and 310 pound-feet, or 317 pound-feet when equipped with the automatic. An entry-level turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder AMG engine making 360 horsepower will be launched in 2023.

The Emira uses a new version of Lotus’s bonded-aluminum platform, with narrower sills and wider door apertures to improve access to its cabin compared to the tight-fitting Evora. Unlike the Evora, the Emira is a two-seater, although there is still some luggage space between seats and rear firewall.

No fewer than three transmission options will be available across the range. The V-6 can be had with either the standard six-speed manual or a six-speed torque-converter automatic. The AMG four-cylinder engine will only be available with an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic.

Lotus has deliberately minimized the use of active systems to reduce complexity and weight. The Emira doesn’t have active dampers or a torque-biasing differential.

The prototype we drove was in European spec and had the softer optional Tour chassis—a firmer Sport will also be offered as an option. It was fitted with Goodyear Eagle F1 tires, and Lotus also will offer the option of track-biased Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 rubber.

The Emira’s interior is much plusher than that of any previous Lotus, with soft-touch surfaces, digital instruments, and a central 10.3-inch touchscreen

Lotus claims the V-6 version weighs 3152 pounds and that the manual-equipped V-6 has a 4.1-second 60-mph time and a 186-mph top speed.

The fully loaded First Edition V-6 will cost $96,100, with U.S. deliveries beginning later this year. The AMG-engined base car will be available in 2023 at a $77,100 starting price
