What We Know So Far

Overview

The upcoming Toyota bZ5X is an electric SUV that will be larger in size than the existing bZ4X that’s set to go on sale soon. With a third row of seats, the bZ5X will be the EV companion to Toyota’s gas-powered Highlander three-row crossover. It looks modern and futuristic on the outside, but we haven’t seen the interior yet, so we don’t know what to expect in terms of the dashboard design. Toyota also hasn’t shared details on the powertrain but it could possibly have solid-state batteries—rather than the more-common lithium-ion variety—and a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive electric drivetrain.

What’s New for 2024?

Toyota hasn’t shared a timeline for this new model, but we think it could arrive sooner rather than later and go on sale for the 2024 model year. It is one of the 30 new EVs that Toyota and Lexus plan to launch by 2030 that will be part of the company’s bZ lineup, a name that stands for “Beyond Zero.” The bZ line will also include other crossover models and a sedan.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

We don’t have any concrete pricing or trim-level information on the bZ5X, but we think it will offer the same XLE and Limited models that the bZ4X does. While that smaller model comes with either single- or dual-motor configurations, we think the bZ5X is likely to come standard with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup.
