At the 1954 Carrera Panamericana, one of the most demanding road races of its era, factory drivers Hans Herrmann and Jaroslav Juhan raced two Porsche 550 Spyders across 1,912 miles of Mexican terrain, and Herrmann won his class by just 36 seconds after five days of racing. The two cars beat far more powerful rivals to finish third and fourth overall, a result significant enough that Porsche has used the “Carrera” name on its sportiest models ever since. Hedley Studios built the 550 J as an officially licensed tribute to that original car, shrinking it to 80 percent scale and swapping the four-cam boxer engine for a fully electric powertrain. The body is hand-formed carbon fiber over a steel spaceframe chassis, keeping the whole car around 728 pounds, several hundred pounds lighter than the 1,213-pound original despite carrying a full electric powertrain. It’s not road legal, built instead for private roads, racetracks, and static display. Buyers can choose from a range of Porsche Paint to Sample colors and heritage liveries, or work with Hedley’s Bespoke program for a fully custom build.
