The satellite communication capability of the iPhones 14 has already proven to be potentially lifesaving. Now Motorola is launching a standalone device that brings similar capabilities to a slew of other iOS and Android devices. The Defy Satellite Link is a lightweight Bluetooth device that uses a just-announced MediaTek chipset to connect to Bullitt’s satellites, allowing for two-way messaging even in spots where there’s no traditional cell phone service. Built for outdoor use, it passed Mil-Spec 810H testing and is IP68-rated for protection against water and dust intrusion. Its battery lasts for multiple days per charge, and it also has physical SOS and location check-in buttons for use without a smartphone. It launches later this year as a standalone device or in a bundle with one year of basic service.
