Long before the McLaren F1 rewrote the rules for road-going supercars in the 1990s, Bruce McLaren had already built one himself. It was called the M6GT, a road-legal version of his dominant M6A Can-Am racer, meant to launch a run of fifty examples before his death in 1970 stopped the project at three prototypes. McLaren Special Operations has now completed the car Bruce never finished, using the original body molds, archival drawings, and a chassis pulled from a period M6A racer itself. Power comes from a period-correct 5.7-liter small-block Chevrolet V8 with the original double “camel hump” cylinder heads, producing around 370 horsepower, routed through a five-speed manual shifted with a hand-turned solid walnut knob. The exterior is finished in Colnbrook White, named for the factory near Heathrow where Bruce first sketched the car, while the cabin is upholstered in green to match the livery of the 1966 M2B, McLaren’s first Formula 1 car. Even the rivets holding the aluminum body together needed imperial-sized tools, since the U.K. abandoned imperial measurements not long after the original M6GT was built. The car makes its public debut this month at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the same circuit where Bruce McLaren died in 1970 testing another one of his race cars.
