The tray set in the middle of the MCD12000’s gloss black front panel does allow you to play CDs, but the unit also serves as a reference-grade digital-to-analog converter, with professional 8-channel DACs handling conversion from the digital inputs and the CD player. The MCD12000 sports seven digital inputs: two coax, two optical, one USB type B, one AES/EBU, and one MCT input — enough for any piece of gear you can imagine.
