1969 DeTomaso Mangusta | Uncrate

Mangusta is Italian for mongoose, the legendary mammal that can kill cobras. In 1964, Alejandro de Tomaso and Carroll Shelby agreed to build a new Can-Am race car for the 1965 Can-Am season. When De Tomaso failed to deliver the agreed-upon five cars, Shelby backed out of the project and joined the development of the Ford GT40. The chassis from that failed project became the basis for the Magusta, which entered production in 1967. Giorgetto Giugiaro designed the Mangusta in another example of his genius with the pen. This 1969 example is one of 401 built over the Mangusta’s four-year production run. The car was restored in the 2010s with a repaint in its silver and an interior trimmed in tan leather. Power comes from a Ford 302 V8, backed by a ZF five-speed gearbox. Italian and gorgeous, the car is currently up for auction on Bring a Trailer.
