Gerald Genta is widely considered to be the greatest watch designer ever — “the Picasso of watchmaking”. Genta’s Royal Oak design is considered to be the first luxury steel sports watch and helped cement Audemar Piguet as one of the foremost watchmakers in the world. On February 10, 2022, Sotheby’s will be auctioning off Genta’s personal Royal Oak watch, on the 50th anniversary of the release of the Royal Oak and the 10th anniversary of Genta’s passing. Also going to auction is a collection of Genta’s drawings and designs — 100 in total. The drawings range from the iconic Royal Oak to the Patek Phillipe Nautilus and the Fantasia from the Disney collection.
