Ayrton Senna’s 1991 Honda NSX Coupe

While testing an early NSX prototype, Ayrton Senna told Honda the chassis felt “a little fragile,” and the company responded by stiffening the frame by 50 percent and reworking the suspension before the car reached production. Years later, in 1991, Honda gave Senna one of the finished cars for personal use in Portugal, where he’d bought a home, this one finished in Formula Red with a black roof and black leather interior. He drove it to that year’s Portuguese Grand Prix, where he qualified third and finished second, and appeared in it again in the documentary Ayrton Senna: Racing Is In My Blood, spinning the rear tires on camera. The car also produced one of the most reproduced images of Senna outside a race car: him in jeans and a button-down shirt, washing it with a garden hose. Honda’s own fax confirming the car’s provenance to Senna, along with its Portuguese registration and ownership documents, will be included with the sale.
