Trucks are versatile and useful, but they’re also large, and difficult to maneuver on tight city streets. The 2022 Ford Maverick keeps the utility in a compact size. In standard guise, it comes with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid powertrain making 191hp and offering 40 mpg city fuel efficiency. A 2.0L, 250hp EcoBoost gas engine is optional. Inside is seating for up to five, a standard 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as a host of safety features. The highlight is arguably the Flexbed system, however. Designed for a wide variety of uses, it has a multi-position tailgate, slots to use 2x4s or 2x6s to subdivide the bed, 12 available anchor points, two 12V 20-amp prewired sources for DIY electrical solutions, and two available 110V outlets for powering tools, laptops, and more. It goes on sale this fall.
