2018 BMW 4-series Gran Coupe Review, Pricing, and Specs

Overview

In its attempt at world coupe domination, BMW added rear doors, a slyly integrated hatchback, and a sexy sloping roofline to the 4-series coupe and rechristened it as the 4-series Gran Coupe. The Gran Coupe outperforms its sibling in the practicality game, but when going up against other four-door coupes, such as the Audi A5 Sportback and the Kia Stinger, the BMW’s muted driving dynamics fail to impress. What the 4-series Gran Coupe offers in place of driver engagement is a posh cabin, slick styling, efficient and powerful engines, and the prestige of the BMW name. But that Ultimate Driving Machine thing? It’s absent here.

What’s New for 2018?

A revised suspension offers sharper responses for 2018, while exterior flash is increased with updated front and rear bumpers, four new wheel designs, and two new paint colors—Snapper Rocks Blue and Sunset Orange.

Pricing

Original MSRP:

  • 430i: $44,295
  • 440i: $50,695

    Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The 4-series Gran Coupe’s two turbocharged engines provide more than enough gumption for spirited driving, and the eight-speed automatic transmission handles gear changes with aplomb. Buyers have the choice of rear- or all-wheel-drive setups. The base 2.0-liter inline-four in the 430i makes 248 hp, and the 440i’s 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine pumps out a healthy 320 hp. While not as athletic as its looks or heritage would have you believe, the 4-series Gran Coupe can still hold its own when pushed hard down a winding road. Unfortunately, rivals like the Audi A5 Sportback and the Alfa Romeo Giulia manage to deliver a higher level of driver involvement and more feedback from the road through their communicative helms. Ride comfort is okay, but it isn’t as supple as expected from a car that offers only a mediocre amount of athleticism.

    Fuel Economy

EPA fuel-economy testing and reporting procedures have changed over time. For the latest numbers on current and older vehicles, visit the EPA’s website and select Find & Compare Cars.

    Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The 4-series Gran Coupe’s comfortable cabin boasts a driver-focused design that angles the center-stack controls slightly to the left and puts all controls right where they should be. It also outdoes its rivals on the luxury front with upscale materials and a host of standard features, including power front sport seats with memory and dual-zone automatic climate control. Options add such niceties as heated leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel, and heated rear seats. The 4-series Gran Coupe’s fastback rear end disguises a practical hatchback that opens up to a large and commodious cargo hold. Adequate storage opportunities exist throughout the cabin, and under the cargo floor, the BMW offers a vast well for storing larger items out of sight.

    Infotainment and Connectivity

The BMW iDrive infotainment system is displayed on a 6.5-inch touchscreen that sprouts from the top of the dashboard; a larger 8.8-inch display, with navigation, is optional. No matter the screen size, the system’s common features are easy to find, and a variety of controls are offered to suit every user. Response times are quick, and the displays are crisp and readable. A Wi-Fi hotspot and Apple CarPlay are optional, but Android Auto is not offered at all.
