While it isn’t Superman #1, it is a Holy Grail of sorts — the first issue of Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. In 1984, 3,000 copies of the oversize, 40-page comic were printed in the initial run, telling the origin story of the turtles, their sensei Splinter, and arch-enemy Shredder. CGC has graded this example at a 9.8, which puts it among 31 other copies in their registry with no other copy graded higher. Conceived by Eastman and Laird as a one-off run, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles went on to spawn a cartoon, action figures, six feature films, and video games, becoming a major cultural franchise.
