1956 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Alloy Gullwing

This one is a bit of a fixer-upper—a “mechanic’s special.” This 300 SL Gullwing is one of 29 alloy-bodied cars made. It was ordered new by Ferrari importer and Le Mans winner Luigi Chinetti as the 26th alloy 300 SL and remained with Chinetti for 20 years. In 1976, Rudi Klein of Los Angeles purchased the car from Chinetti for $30,000 — and the car sat in his central LA junkyard for nearly 50 years. In 1981, Klein backed into the 300 SL with his forklift, leaving a dent in the rear. The car was originally finished in black but now wears silver; other than the paint, it still has its factory body, engine, and transmission. This 300 SL is estimated to fetch $6 million when it goes to auction in October.
