YouTuber Builds DIY Apple Silicon iMac Using M1 Mac mini [Video]
YouTube creator Luke Miani has built the “world’s first” DIY Apple Silicon iMac using components from an M1 Mac mini.
I’m tired of waiting for the new 2021 iMacs with Apple Silicon processors, so I decided that I’d take matters into my own hands and make my very own Apple Silicon iMac powered by the M1 chip. And this is a real iMac, not just a monitor! It’s… the iMac mini! In this video I’ll show you how to build a DIY iMac with Apple Silicon at home! It’s super cheap and easy!
While the idea seems genius at first, Miani’s implementation buried the ports and power button inside the iMac enclosure. Perhaps with a little more effort the iMac’s power button and ports could have interfaced with the M1 Mac mini; however, Miani notes that for most users it would be better to turn the old iMac into an HDMI display and use the M1 Mac mini as intended.
