Adding a 40-hp electric motor to the rear axle doesn’t change the 2023 Corolla Hybrid’s net output compared with its front-drive counterpart—net output remains 134 horsepower—but it will give the all-wheel-drive model an advantage in the snow and other low-traction situations. The Corolla certainly doesn’t need extra traction off the line on dry pavement, as its 9.0-second 60 mph time proves. (And that time increased by about 1.2 seconds if the battery charge fell below five bars.) No, the point here is seamless all-weather efficiency, as indicated by an EPA combined rating as high as 48 mpg for the LE AWD model. We only saw 40 mpg overall in our SE test car, but hey: lead feet. Pricing starts at $25,210 for the LE AWD and $27,610 for the SE AWD.
