The 2022 Volvo XC60 T8 Polestar Engineered Extended Range is the priciest and sportiest member of its family. Updates for this mid-2022-model-year update include a stronger electric motor and a larger battery, which have a meaningful impact on both its acceleration and EV range. But given that it shares its updated powertrain with certain less expensive XC60 models, the benefit of its performance-oriented Polestar upgrades is less clear.

The 2022 Volvo XC60 T8 Polestar Engineered Extended Range has a plug-in-hybrid powertrain that combines a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, an electric motor between the engine and eight-speed automatic transmission, and another electric motor that powers the rear wheels.

For mid-2022, updates to the plug-in-hybrid T8 Polestar Extended Range setup see total system output jump from 415 to 455 horsepower and from 494 to 523 pound-feet of torque.

Unfortunately, the plug-in-hybrid XC60’s weak 3.7-kW onboard charger carries over, meaning it can take between five and eight hours to refill an empty battery, depending on the amperage of the Level 2 charging station.

While the 2022 XC60 Polestar Engineered no longer has a unique plug-in-hybrid powertrain, it does feature model-specific equipment such as manually adjustable Öhlins dampers, 21- or 22-inch forged-aluminum wheels with summer performance tires, and an Akebono-developed brake system with huge front rotors and six-piston Brembo calipers.
