Expanding on the technology they use to power their cars, Tesla is making batteries that can power a community. The Megapack is a massive energy storage system that’s intended for large-scale commercial and utility use. Made up of connectable containers, each unit comes preassembled with battery modules, bi-directional inverters, and a thermal management system with the ability to hold up to 3 MWh of energy on its own. When combined, these giga-sized grids can boost solar energy collection and reduce the need for fossil fuels, and ultimately lower corporate carbon footprints. Tesla is currently taking deposits of $5,000 for delivery in 2022.
