Apple is Working on a MagSafe Battery Pack for iPhone 12 [Report]

Apple is working on a MagSafe battery pack for its new iPhone 12 devices, according to a report from Bloomberg.

The accessory has been in development for at least a year and had been scheduled to launch in the ‘months following’ the iPhone 12’s release.

The battery pack would attach to the back of an iPhone 12 using the MagSafe system, which all the new phones use for charging and pairing other accessories like cases and wallets. Some prototypes of the battery pack have a white rubber exterior, said one of the people, who asked not to be identified because the product isn’t yet public. The new accessory would differ from Apple battery add-ons for previous iPhones in that it only provides additional battery life and doesn’t serve as a full protective case.

Bloomberg says that in internal testing, MagSafe was strong enough to keep the charging unit in place; however, there have been some issues with the iPhone mistakenly reporting the pack is overheating and problems related to using the device with and without an iPhone case.

Sources say that development challenges could lead to the accessory being cancelled; however, a string found in iOS 14.5 beta 2 hints that it’s coming.

“Optimized Battery Mobile Charge Mode Enabled To reduce battery aging, AirPods Pro learn from your daily charging routine so they can wait to finish charging past 80% until you need to use them. To improve charging efficiency and maximize available battery life, the battery pack will keep your phone charged at around 90%.
