2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Comes into Clearer View

KGP Photography Car and Driver

Jeep‘s popular Grand Cherokee SUV is adding a three-row model to its lineup, which will go up against popular three-row SUVs such as the Kia Telluride. The redesigned SUV will likely keep its two-row model as well, but this prototype we spotted testing gives a clearer look at the upcoming six- or seven-seat variant.

Compared with the last Grand Cherokee we spotted, this test car has far less camouflage and reveals more of the SUV’s proportions, which look similar to the Dodge Durango’s. We can also see more of the redesigned front end and taillights. We think the new front end could borrow styling cues from the full-size Grand Wagoneer—especially in the headlights and grille. The taillights are also significantly thinner than the current model’s, and they look dashing.

The three-row version will have a longer wheelbase than the two-row Grand Cherokee. Both models are expected to have more interior and cargo space than the outgoing model thanks to a stretched version of the Alfa Romeo Giorgio platform from the Giulia sedan and Stelvio SUV. There will also be significant improvements to the interior, including a larger touchscreen, digital gauge cluster, a rotary shift knob, and nicer materials throughout. Well-equipped versions could even encroach on the territory of luxury SUVs such as the BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE-class.

Expect FCA’s naturally-aspirated Pentastar 3.6-liter V-6 to be the three-row Grand Cherokee’s base engine, with a more powerful V-8 available. We could also see higher-performance models from SRT and maybe even the 700-plus-horsepower supercharged V-8 will find its way under the hood since the Durango now has a 710-hp SRT Hellcat model. A plug-in hybrid powertrain should also be available eventually.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee should launch early in 2021 and arrive in dealerships by the end of the year. We’ll know more about the new three-row Grand Cherokee soon.
