New ‘Apple Watch Series 7’ to Get Faster Processor, Improved Wireless, Updated Display [Report]

Apple’s next generation Apple Watch could get a faster processor, improved wireless connectivity, and an updated screen, according to new report from Bloomberg. Future models are said to feature body temperature and blood sugar sensors, as well as an extreme sports edition.

For this year’s model, Apple has tested thinner display borders and a new lamination technique that brings the display closer to the front cover. The new Watch is likely to be slightly thicker overall, but not in a way that’s noticeable to the user. The model will include updated ultra-wideband functionality, the same underlying technology in the Apple AirTag item finder.

Previously, Apple had aimed to put a body temperature sensor in this year’s model; however, that appears to have been pushed back to next year. The blood sugar sensor for monitoring glucose levels is still several years away.

A body temperature sensor may be useful in detecting in COVID-19 and would help Apple compete with rivals like the Fitbit Sense. Blood sugar monitoring would give Apple Watch a feature unmatched by its competition but developing a non-invasive sensor is complex.

Next year, Apple reportedly plans to update the Apple Watch SE and unveil a new version of its smartwatch to target extreme sports athletes. Described by Apple insiders as an ‘explorer’ or ‘adventure’ edition, it was in development for as early as this year. However, sources say it’s now likely to launch in 2022, helping Apple compete with rugged offerings from Garmin and Casio.
