Kauhale Kai | Uncrate

Bringing together modern architecture, ancient Polynesian culture, and laid-back Hawaiian style, de Reus Architects have created Kauhale Kai. The tropical family retreat is located on the Big Island’s Mauna Kea Resort on the edge of Kaunaoa Bay. Reminiscent of a small village, the resident is made up of a series of small pavilions organized around an architectural pool. The hale structures reference ancient Polynesian culture with their traditional hipped roofs, stepped ceilings, and structural columns. Natural materials run throughout including exteriors clad in copper shingles, cement plaster, cedar eaves, and travertine pavers, while interiors feature cedar ceiling and cabinetry and floors made from local Ohia wood. A network of lush outdoor gardens connect the pavilions and encourage the bare-foot spirit of aloha.
