Hale Mau’u | Uncrate
Translated to “House in the Grass,” Hale Mau’u is a tribute to Hawaii’s Big Island. The vacation home, designed by Walker Warner Architects, is set against a volcanic backdrop of black lava rock, golden grasses, and Kiawe trees. Its four volumes are nestled among the native landscape and arranged to create a central courtyard. Connected by a timber boardwalk running from the mountains to the ocean, the low-lying buildings are flanked by sliding barn doors. When open, the interior is connected to the outdoor living spaces and opened to views of the peaks on one side and the Pacific on the other. When closed, the screens provide shade while producing an ethereal glowing effect at night.
