Every New 2021 Diesel for Sale in the U.S. Today

Car and Driver

The core advantage of diesel engines is that they’re compression ignition engines and rely on the mechanical squeeze to light each cylinder’s air and fuel. It’s a more efficient way to convert fuel into mechanical work. Alas, compression ignition is louder than spark-ignited gas engines. And diesel soot is wickedly difficult to economically control. Just ask Volkswagen, which in 2014 was caught cheating up their TDI range of engines to get past emissions regulations. Jobs were lost. Some people went to prison.

The VW diesel scandal almost overnight killed the diesel-car market. But then those vehicles known as “trucks” are a different story.

Yeah, diesel was always a marginal player in the United States car market. But the nerdy and thrifty among us still crave diesels. Click like a maniac here through this full list of every diesel-powered vehicle on sale in the U.S. Or click like a calm, reasonable person. Just click.

Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV

Many of the vehicles on this list charge a fat stack to add their optional diesel powertrain. Not the Cadillac Escalade. The price for a gas-powered 420-hp Escalade is the same as the 277-hp 3.0-liter turbo-diesel V-6. And they both come with 10-speed automatics. It’s the biggest option on the list, and in terms of luxury diesels, rivaled only by the more expensive Land Rover Range Rover on this list.

  • Base price: $77,490 (RWD Escalade) $80,490 (RWD Escalade ESV)
  • Engine: 277-hp turbocharged 3.0-liter diesel inline-6 engine, 10-speed automatic transmission
  • EPA Fuel Economy combined/city/highway: 23/21/27 mpg (RWD)
  • Max Towing: 8000 lb (RWD Escalade) 7900 lb (RWD Escalade ESV)

The Duramax four-cylinder, with 181 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque will be offered on both half-ton and three-quarter-ton versions of the Express. The three-quarter- and one-ton pickups get pricey as the cab adds doors and the interior trim gets luxurious.

Paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission and and only available with four-wheel drive in the F-150, the Power Stroke achieves an EPA-rated 27 mpg on the highway. The diesel is offered on the SLE, SLT, All-Terrain, and Denali models but not on the base SL trim. Jeep Wrangler

Jeep is finally offering the Wrangler with a diesel engine. In this case, it’s a version of the same Italian-made, 3.0-liter turbo-diesel V-6 that Ram offers in its 1500 pickup. In the Wrangler, it’s rated at 260 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of peak torque. The diesel engine is listed as a $4,500 option, but it also requires buying the $1500 eight-speed automatic transmission. The diesel option is available on most four-door Wrangler Unlimiteds with the exception of some special-edition models. It is not yet offered with the two-door body style. The EPA says the Wrangler Unlimited EcoDiesel should get 22 mpg in the city and up to 29 mpg on the highway, and we measured its highway fuel economy at 22 mpg.

  • Base price: $39,470
  • Engine: 260-hp turbocharged 3.0-liter diesel V-6 engine, eight-speed automatic transmission
  • EPA Fuel Economy combined/city/highway: 25/22/29 mpg
  • Max Towing: 3500 lb

Jeep Gladiator

Oh boy, here comes the Jeep turned pickup Gladiator. Like the Wrangler, it also has a 260-hp 3.0-liter turbo-diesel V-6 engine with 442 lb-ft of torque at 1400 rpm. One drawback to the diesel powertrain, is that it drops the tow rating from 7650 pounds to 6000 due to cooling restrictions. It’s 600 pounds heavier than its gas counterpart too, mostly due to the added sound deadening and extra heft. The $4000 powertrain option requires the $2000 eight-speed automatic transmission, and is available on almost every Gladiator trim, save for Sport and Mojave editions. This might sound crazy, but the top trim 2021 Gladiator High Altitude diesel starts at $57,260. That’s over $4400 more than what the four-wheel drive Ford F250 Super Duty crew cab starts at.

  • Base price: $43,005
  • Engine: 260-hp turbocharged 3.0-liter diesel V-6 engine, eight-speed automatic transmission
  • EPA Fuel Economy combined/city/highway: 25/22/29 mpg
  • Max Towing: 3500 lb

  • EPA Fuel Economy combined/city/highway: 24/22/28 mpg

Like its big brother, the Land Rover Range Rover Sport the smaller Sport derivative has a Td6 version powered by the Ford-made, 3.0-liter, turbocharged V-6 rated at 254-horsepower and 443 lb-ft of torque. That’s 4 horsepower more than the same engine (more or less) is rated in Ford’s F-150 pickup and 1 lb-ft of torque fewer. Like a proper Range Rover, the Sport comes standard with all-wheel drive and the amazing ability to cover terrain that would challenge goats and yaks.

  • Base price: $80,850
