Apple Overtook Samsung as Top Global Smartphone Vendor in Q4 2020 [Chart]

Apple overtook Samsung as the top global smartphone vendor in the fourth quarter of 2020, according to Gartner. The last time Apple was the top smartphone vendor was in Q4 2016.

Gartner also reports that smartphone sales to end users declined 5.4% in the quarter and were down 12.5% for the year.

“The sales of more 5G smartphones and lower-to-mid-tier smartphones minimized the market decline in the fourth quarter of 2020,” said Anshul Gupta, senior research director at Gartner. “Even as consumers remained cautious in their spending and held off on some discretionary purchases, 5G smartphones and pro-camera features encouraged some end users to purchase new smartphones or upgrade their current smartphones in the quarter.”

Samsung’s sales declined 14.6% last year but it was still able to retain the number one spot in full year results. Only Apple and Xiaomi experienced growth in 2020. Huawei’s decline in shipments allowed Apple to take the number two spot for the year.
