Overview
Lexus’s flagship LX SUV will debut soon sporting an upgraded interior and riding on a fully modernized platform with a twin-turbocharged engine. Based on the new Toyota Land Cruiser—which sadly will not be sold in the U.S.—the LX takes off-road capability seriously but doesn’t skimp on the luxury. The previous-generation model came with a burly V-8 engine underhood, but we expect the 2022 to make do with a twin-turbo V-6. Four-wheel drive will likely remain standard. When it comes to the LX’s interior, we anticipate Lexus will pull out all the stops to compete with more contemporary large luxury SUVs, such as the BMW X7, the Land Rover Range Rover, and the Mercedes-Benz GLS-class.
What’s New for 2022?
Following the last generation’s 13-year-long run, the 2022 LX receives a ground-up redesign. We expect Lexus to unveil the new SUV by the end of 2021 and begin deliveries in early 2022.
Pricing and Which One to Buy
Following convention, the new LX will likely cost more than the outgoing model. Lexus hasn’t released any information on the SUV’s standard and optional features, but we found a trademark filing for the name LX600, which indicates the big SUV will wear that badge when it hits the market. The last-generation LX was offered in both two- and three-row configurations; we see no reason why Lexus would change that.
Engine, Transmission, and Performance
In all likelihood, the LX600 will debut with a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 engine, a 10-speed automatic transmission, and standard four-wheel drive. This powertrain launched in the new Toyota Land Cruiser, which shares its mechanical underpinnings with the LX. In the Land Cruiser, the engine makes a stout 409 horsepower; we expect the same in the Lexus. Also, given Toyota’s penchant for hybrid powertrains, we wouldn’t be surprised to see a gas-electric setup under the LX’s hood, similar to the one used in the 2022 Tundra pickup.
