2022 BMW 2-Series What We Know So Far

Driving enthusiasts can rejoice at BMW’s decision to still build the next-generation 2-series coupe on a rear-drive platform. Along with an available xDrive all-wheel-drive system, the two-door Bimmer will be offered with two turbocharged engine options: a 2.0-liter four-cylinder (230i models) and a 3.0-liter straight-six (M240i). While the convertible body style is being discontinued, we can only hope the same fate doesn’t befall the manual transmission. If the new BMW M3 sedan and M4 coupe are any indication, a stick-shift 2-series seems likely. Apart from leaked photos of its modern rear end and official images of a heavily camouflaged model, we don’t know what the coupe’s exterior or interior will look like. Those details and more will have to wait until later this year when the 2022 BMW 230i and M240i coupe are officially revealed.

What’s New for 2022?

The 2022 BMW 2-series will mark an all-new generation for one of the German automaker’s most entertaining models. While we’re happy to report it will still come standard with rear-wheel drive, a drop-top option is being dropped and a manual transmission hasn’t been confirmed. Thankfully, the even racier M2 coupe will also return.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

    BMW hasn’t said how much the 2022 2-series will cost, but we know it’ll be offered as the 230i and the M240i. We don’t expect prices to rise much. We’re told more information will be released in the next few months, and we expect models to hit dealer showrooms this fall. However, the rear-drive 230i and the all-wheel-drive M240i will arrive first, which means their alternate drivetrains will follow and might not be offered until the 2023 model year.

    Engine, Transmission, and Performance

    The outgoing 2-series is an entertaining little two-door that some call the quintessential BMW. Not only does its finely tuned chassis contribute to a sense of playfulness and refinement, but so do its rear-drive architecture and smooth engines. We expect those characteristics to continue on the next generation, and power will again come from either a turbocharged four- or six-cylinder mill. The 230i features the former, a 2.0-liter with around 250 horsepower. The more powerful M240i will a 382-hp 3.0-liter. Both engines will be compatible with rear- or all-wheel drive. We know the six will pair with an eight-speed automatic, and we expect the four to do the same. We’ll just have to wait and see if a manual transmission is also offered.
