Overview

Since its debut in 1963, the celebrated Porsche 911 has consistently pushed the boundaries of the sports-car universe. But instead of dramatically altering the car’s styling, Porsche engineers have spent the past few decades perfecting every detail, making the 911 one of the most highly engineered road vehicles available. Its flat-six engine sings a siren song while quickly launching the 911 to illegal speeds. Convertible and targa body styles are offered, in addition to the coupe, and all-wheel drive is available. Sports-car manufacturers have spent years targeting the Porsche 911 for good reason: it’s one of the best.

What’s New for 2018?

The biggest news for 2018 is the introduction of the 911 Carrera T model. According to Porsche, the T stands for Touring, so it’s been lowered, lightened, and simplified for a purer driving experience. And although it lacks some of the luxuries of the other Carrera models, it still provides the same thrills. The rest of the lineup sees minor changes for 2018, some of which provide options for more power, more luxury, and more opportunities for customization.

    Engine, Transmission, and Performance

    The 911’s twin-turbo flat-six offers thrilling acceleration in all of its potencies—370, 420, and 450 hp. The standard seven-speed manual transmission is fun to work, while the optional seven-speed dual-clutch automatic sets the standard for quick shifts and intelligent programming. The 911’s turbocharged engine is smooth, makes great noises, and is extremely powerful, with plenty of grunt available right off idle. If anyone asks you how much car $100,000 can buy, tell them to look no further than the 911. A strong performer and a joy to drive, it’s worth every last penny. It corners with alacrity, the body stays flat, and the tires deliver gobs of grip. All-wheel-drive models exit corners with particular ferocity, clawing out of bends like a cat being sprayed by a Super Soaker.

    Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

    The Porsche 911 is in the business of going fast, so the interior is a businesslike environment. In its barest form, the 911’s cabin lacks many amenities you might find in a moderately priced compact car. But on the upside, even the base seats are comfortable and supportive. Porsche enables buyers to customize everything from the upholstery to the seatbelts—for a handsome sum, of course. The 911’s engine location—hung out over the tail—may be its defining characteristic, but cargo space suffers as a result. The only spaces to store cargo are in the front compartment and atop the otherwise useless rear seats.

    Infotainment and Connectivity

    The 911’s touchscreen infotainment system offers a classy, mostly monochrome appearance that blends in with the dashboard’s other controls. Standard features of the Porsche Communication Management System include navigation, Bluetooth and USB connectivity, aWi-Fi hotspot, eight-speaker audio, SiriusXM satellite radio, and Apple CarPlay, but not Android Auto. The 7.0-inch display’s performance proved to be snappy in our testing, and navigating its various menus was natural and easy.
