17 States Are Sending Stimulus Checks. Will You Get One?
Another round of stimulus checks is coming. (You might have already gotten one even.)
However, this time, the federal government isn’t involved — and whether or not you qualify depends on where you live and other factors.
Seventeen states have approved their own stimulus boosts — in much smaller amounts than previous federal checks — to help residents deal with rising inflation.
The checks vary depending on state, anywhere from $50 to more than $1,000, and may also have other requirements.
Here is a list of states offering stimulus checks as of August 2022.
California
Californian couples who file jointly can receive a $700 payment and individual taxpayers can receive $350 if they don’t have dependents. Both need to make less than $150,000 annually to qualify.
Eligible households can also receive another $350 if they have qualifying dependents. Payments will be issued between October 2022 and January 2023.
Colorado
Colorado residents will receive $750 as individual filers and $1,500 as joint filers. To qualify, filers will need to have been a Colorado resident for the entirety of the 2021 tax year.
Payments will be distributed between September 2022 and January 2023. If you’ve already filed your taxes, your check should arrive by late September.
Delaware
Delaware has been sending $300 “relief rebate” payments to all taxpayers who filed 2020 returns. Couples who filed jointly will each receive $300 to help with higher gas and food prices.
Delaware residents who didn’t file returns in 2020 may still be eligible for the rebate. Those instructions are expected to be released in October.
Florida
Eligible Florida households with children should have recently received a one-time $450 payment per child.
Hope Florida, the state program distributing the checks, is run by the Department of Children and Families. Eligible households include caregivers, foster parents, individuals in the state Guardian Assistance Program, and families who benefit from the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program.
Qualifying households received the payment immediately, and all payments were to be distributed before July 25.
Georgia
Georgians who filed tax returns in 2020 and 2021 are eligible to receive between a $250 to $500 rebate payment, depending on filing status.
Single filers can receive a maximum of $250, heads of households can receive up to $375, and joint filers a maximum of $500.
All rebates on tax returns filed by April 18 were expected to be sent out by early August.
Hawaii
Hawaiian taxpayers, and their dependents, who filed returns in 2021 will receive a rebate of $300 if they make less than $100,000 annually. Those who made more than $100,000 would receive $100.
Payments will be issued between September and the end of the year, depending on when taxpayers filed.
Idaho
Idaho taxpayers who qualify can receive $75 or 12% of their 2020 Idaho state taxes, whichever is greater.
To qualify, taxpayers will need to be full-time Idaho residents and have filed 2020 and 2021 state returns or be full-time Idaho residents who filed grocery-credit refund returns. Dependents are also eligible.
Payments began in March. Taxpayers have until Dec. 31, 2022, to file returns and receive the rebate.
Illinois
Qualifying taxpayers in Illinois can receive a $50 rebate if they make less than $200,000 per year or $400,000 per year as a couple filing jointly. Dependents will receive $100 each, up to three dependents.
Rebates will begin being issued in September and continue for several months.
Indiana
Indiana residents are receiving a double round of rebates in 2022.
Taxpayers who filed a return in 2020 and 2021 (before April 18) will receive a one-time $125 payment. Couples filing jointly will receive $250. Payments started in May and continued through the summer.
A second payment of $200 is slated to be issued by direct deposit or check beginning in late August.
Maine
Full-time Maine residents with an income of less than $100,000 can qualify for Maine’s $850 direct relief payment. Residents who file as head of household will need to make less than $150,000 to qualify, and the maximum for couples filing jointly is $200,000.
Payments began in June. Residents have until Oct. 31 to file a tax return to be eligible.
Minnesota
A state bill signed in Minnesota in May approved a $750 payment for some frontline workers.
To qualify, the frontline workers must have worked in Minnesota at least 120 hours between March 15, 2020, and June 30, 2021, while not being eligible for remote work. Applicants had to meet other income and work requirements.
Applications closed in July and payments will be distributed in the fall of 2022.
New Jersey
Nearly 1 million qualifying New Jersey families will receive one-time checks of up to $500 in 2022. There are several requirements for eligibility, such as income and having at least one dependent.
As part of the Excluded New Jerseyans Fund, taxpayers who use a taxpayer identification number, instead of a Social Security number, can also qualify for a $500 payment. This includes resident and nonresident aliens, spouses and dependents.
New Mexico
New Mexico also issued multiple rebates to taxpayers in 2022.
Individual taxpayers making less than $75,000 annually can qualify for a $250 rebate. Joint filers must make less than $150,000 annually to receive $500.
Payments were automatically sent in July to everyone who made a state return in 2021.
A second rebate of $500 for single filers and $1,000 for joint filers was distributed in two payments in June and August of 2022.
Oregon
Oregon taxpayers who lived in Oregon for the last six months of 2020 and also received the Earned Income Tax Credit are eligible to receive a $600 one-time payment per household.
Payments were distributed in the summer of 2022.
Rhode Island
Rhode Island families can receive a one-time payment of $250 per child, up to three children.
To qualify, the children must have been listed on taxpayers’ 2021 state and federal tax returns, and they must make less than $100,000 annually — or $200,000 if filing jointly.
Payments will begin in October 2022.
South Carolina
Later this year, South Carolina will issue a one-time payment of up to $700 to eligible taxpayers.
The amount will be determined by information on your tax return and automatically distributed by the end of the year. Residents have until Oct. 17 to file their 2021 tax returns to be eligible.
Virginia
Virginia taxpayers who had a tax liability in 2021 are eligible for a one-time payment of $250 to individuals and $500 to couples who filed jointly.
Taxpayers must file before Nov. 1 to receive the rebate, and eligible taxpayers who filed before July 1 should receive payment by Oct. 31.
Other States Considering Stimulus Refunds
Five other states — Kentucky, Massachusetts, Montana, North Carolina and Pennsylvania — have introduced legislation that would include stimulus check payments. But, as of August 2022, that legislation has yet to be signed into law.
