Ecurie Ecosse
Britain’s Ecurie Ecosse LM-C is a loose re-creation of the Jaguar C-type racers that a Scottish race team campaigned in the 1950s. The car is not an exact replica, however, and has been modified enough to be road legal in the U.K.

Ecurie Ecosse takes its name from a 1950s Scottish privateer race team, and the LM-C is an homage to the Le Mans–winning Jaguar C-type.

Ecurie Ecosse raced with considerable success in numerous championships and race disciplines in the 1950s and ’60s, winning Le Mans twice with privateer Jaguar D-types. Its name means “Scottish stable” in French.

The LM-C is wider and longer than a real C-type, and although the steel spaceframe chassis is made from the same techniques, it has been modified for extra strength.

Power comes from a period-appropriate Jaguar XK inline-six, but with capacity increased to 4.2 liters and the addition of fuel injection and an exhaust catalyst so it can pass the emissions standards required for the U.K.’s Individual Vehicle Approval compliance test.

The engine makes 300 horsepower and is saddled with about 2200 pounds of mass. Performance is brisk even by modern standards.

The rest of the LM-C driving experience is as analog as an original C-type, with unassisted steering and no form of traction control or anti-lock brakes.

Grip from the period-pattern 185-section-width Avon Turbospeed tires is limited, but the LM-C telegraphs its limits clearly.

The cabin is wider than that of an original C-type and gets plusher trim, but there is no weather protection beyond what’s provided by the cut-down speedster windshield and a pop-up glass wind deflector.

The modern Ecurie Ecosse company will build a limited run of cars for customers. Jaguar is also planning to build officially sanctioned C-type Continuation cars.
