The rate of advancement in the full-size truck segment makes “class-leading” status a tricky target to hit. Toyota doesn’t seem to have gone after that mark with the long-awaited redesign of its new Tundra, particularly when it comes to the truck’s lesser-volume models. Instead, the latest Tundra focuses on refining the elements that helped its predecessor cultivate a loyal fanbase.

The latest Toyota Tundra is powered by a standard twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V-6, which in the mid-level state of tune of our Limited test truck produces 389 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque.

All new Tundra models feature a 10-speed automatic transmission that shifts with unerring smoothness.

Our scales have shown that the new Tundra is rather heavy across the board, with our four-wheel-drive Limited crew cab weighing a porky 5856 pounds.

Our test truck’s 6.1-second run to 60 mph puts it at the back of the current full-size-truck pack.

We also averaged just 14 mpg during our test, and the Limited could only manage 19 mpg on our 75-mpg highway test, which is 3 mpg below its EPA estimate.

On its optional 20-inch wheels, the Tundra Limited returns a respectable level of ride comfort. But its coil-spring suspension does not imbue it with the degree of refinement this setup brings to the Ram 1500.

This crew-cab Tundra felt smaller on the road than its 233.6-inch length suggests, despite it being similar in overall size to other half-ton trucks. Its back seat, however, is noticeably narrower and has less legroom than its domestic rivals.

The highlight of the new Tundra’s straightforward interior treatment is the optional 14.0-inch center touchscreen, which features bright graphics, a sensible layout, and easily decipherable fonts that are almost comically large.

Despite lacking the Tundra’s optional 437-hp hybrid powertrain, load-leveling rear air springs, and several more luxurious amenities, our mid-grade Limited example cost $60,188.
