For years, the solid-state battery has been the EV industry’s most coveted breakthrough, chased by Toyota, Mercedes-Benz, and BMW with billions in R&D. Founded in Finland and built in Estonia, Verge Motorcycles claims to have just beaten them all to it. The Gen 2 TS Pro is the first production motorcycle to ship with what the company calls a solid-state battery, built by Verge spinoff Donut Lab, though battery researchers and at least one senior CATL executive have publicly questioned whether the chemistry holds up to that claim. It’s available in two capacities: a 20.2-kWh standard pack good for 217 miles with 100 kW peak charging, or a 33.3-kWh long-range version stretching to 370 miles with 200 kW peak charging, hitting 80 percent in under 10 minutes. The Donut Motor 2.0 drives it all through a patented hubless rear wheel, producing 137 hp and 737 lb-ft of torque for a 0-60 mph time of 3.5 seconds.
