Tina Fey Bought Her First Car during the Pandemic Lockdown

  • Tina Fey, best known for the TV show 30 Rock, admitted to Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show this week that she’d never owned a car until the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • To her husband’s and daughter’s disappointment, she said, she went for something that she considered “safe.”
  • Read on to find out what she settled on. Hint: She has nicknamed it “Karen.”

Actress and writer Tina Fey stopped by Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show last night to regale her fellow Saturday Night Live alum with tales from a rich person’s quarantine. Fey says she spent the first two months of New York City’s spring lockdown holed up in her multimillion-dollar multi-story Upper West Side apartment with her family. But even penthouses can be stifling when you’re locked inside them for months on end, so as the lockdown wore on, Fey, seeking a sense of agency, decided to purchase her first-ever car.

Fey told Fallon that her husband urged her to buy something fun, like a Mini Cooper or a Jeep (this is the point in the interview when it becomes clear that the Fey household is an expert-free zone when it comes to car shopping). She, instead, wanted “a car that looks like a medical sneaker” and one that is “so safe.” So, like countless middle-aged women before her, Fey bought a Subaru Forester.

She is, at least, aware of the stereotype. Fey told Fallon her 15-year-old daughter called the Subaru a “Karen car.” Fey brought photo evidence of her purchase with her to The Tonight Show (above), in which she poses next to her Forester dressed as what we can only assume is supposed to be a Midwestern suburban mom costume.

We like Subaru Foresters as much as the next person, and they really are safe, at least according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), both of which gave the car top scores in their tests. But if the Celebrity Net Worth internet estimated that we had $75 million in the bank, we’d probably buy a Porsche Boxster GTS 4.0 instead. If we were really worried (Fey says she’s had a license for years but “never used it”), we’d just shell out a little extra for driving lessons.
