Porsche 959 Paris-Dakar Rally Car

The Porsche 959 was built to prove Porsche’s endurance credentials, on and off-road. At the 1986 Paris-Dakar rally, the three 911-esque shapes stood out in a fleet of trucks, SUVs, and motorcycles about to tackle the race. This 959 finished second to the winning entry, also a 959, with Jacky Ickx and Claude Brasseur behind the wheel. Proving that endurance isn’t just a catchword, Porsche has finished a complete restoration of the car, making it ready to compete again. Porsche Heritage and Porsche Classic joined to restore the car, which is part of a display featuring all three Paris-Dakar 959s. The car had never been disassembled since returning from the rally, and the team managed to replace as little as possible while keeping the patina of crossing over 11,000 miles of brutal terrain. Jacky Ickx was the first person to drive the car after its overhaul in a snow-covered stone quarry — a fitting tribute to two motorsports legends.
