Most throwback shoes focus on just one model. For the XC-72, New Balance draws from several. Inspired by 1970s concept cars, it has a vertically split outsole with the “gripper” tread of the XC15 on one side and the classic studs of the 375 on the other. The heel clip borrows its herringbone pattern from the 620 outsole, while the upper is made with a nylon vamp, synthetic “N” logo, and suede overlays. The squared toe is again a callback to those vintage concept cars, and the design is finished with a low-profile microfiber tongue.
