As Orson Welles told us nearly 50 years ago, “F” is for fake — and MSCHF wants to sell you some fake artwork. In a scheme that the artist would absolutely approve of, MSCHF is selling 1,000 Andy Warhol sketches; one of which is an actual Warhol and the other 999 of which are forgeries. Warhol’s Factory brought the industrial assembly line to the art world, designed to mass-reproduce art much as Detroit mass-produced cars. MSCHF turns Warhol’s idea on its head, hiding a hand-drawn sketch in a mass of non-original reproductions — simultaneously devaluing Warhol’s original work and inflating the value of the forgeries. Brilliant.
