LM Creations has engineered a kit that turns BMW’s classic R-Type air-cooled bikes into electric motorcycles — and keeps the airhead’s looks. LM’s kit takes an airhead engine case and replaces the internal parts with an electric motor and bolts directly to the existing gearbox. The iconic valve heads are recreated with standoffs and original valve covers, keeping the boxer engine’s look. A 72v motor with up to 20kW peak output is powered by a 4.3kW battery pack, mounted under a composite cover designed to look like the stock gas tank. LM says the kit is currently good for about 50 miles of range, with bigger battery packs planned for the future. The kit is available for all airhead bikes built between 1969 and 1995.
