Is This the Last Subaru WRX as We Know It?

Subaru announced its electrification intentions for the next generation of its high-performance WRX STI right around the time we tested the 2022 Subaru WRX. That made us wonder: Is this the last Subaru WRX as we know it? We explore that question in this video while covering this WRX’s test results and driving dynamics.

The WRX has been a performance staple for Subaru since the 1990s. While the times have changed, the recipe—a punchy turbocharged engine, all-wheel drive, and a heavy dose of rally inspiration—hasn’t with the 2022 model.

Many other parts of the sedan have changed, though. The WRX now shares a platform with two decidedly non-performance vehicles, the Subaru Outback and Forester. Its body is wider and longer than the previous generation, and while it has a larger-displacement 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, it only offers three additional horsepower. The redline is lower, too, so on paper it’s not off to a great start.

As we explore in the video, the WRX’s driving experience quickly dispels any concerns. On the road, the ride seems softer and the cabin quieter than the previous generation, while the punchy engine and communicative clutch and shifter make for enjoyable downshifts. We also appreciate the lack of “sport” modes or buttons.

We also evaluated the WRX at the track at M1 Concourse near Detroit, where the sedan’s handling quickly built confidence. The steering is precise, if light on feedback, and the suspension soaks up curbing.

In the video, we cover the WRX’s performance test results. In brief, this WRX posted a slightly quicker quarter-mile result than the last model we tested, despite being heavier. (Note: we have seen quicker results from previous WRXs of the same generation.) While the 60-mph acceleration was a few tenths of a second slower, that’s because the lower redline requires a shift to third gear to reach that speed.
