The 911 didn’t end in 1998 with the last of the 993-generation cars, but an era did. That makes the last of the air-cooled 911s a special point of focus for aftermarket restorers like Singer and Gunther Werks. This Gunther Werks 911 Remastered started as a 1997 911 and has been transformed with the aim of answering what the 911 might be like today if Porsche’s classic era had never ended. Unique among those 25 cars is the Carbon Noire Commission, pictured here, one of 25 built by Gunther Werks in California. A 4.0-liter flat-six making over 400 horsepower built by Rothsport Road and Race in Oregon sits over the rear axle, pushing the car from 0-60 in under four seconds. A Getrag G50 six-speed puts that power to the pavement, helped by a lack of weight thanks to the liberal application of carbon fiber body panels. The interior is trimmed gloss black carbon fiber and cognac aeronautical leather, complimenting the black and gold exterior. The car goes to auction at RM Sotheby’s Monterey event in August.
