Group B was arguably the height — and the low — of the FIA’s rally racing eras. From 1982 to 1986, Group B produced some of the most powerful and sophisticated rally cars ever, with 600 horsepower turbocharged motors and everything from the last mid-engined, rear-wheel-drive car to win the championship to the rise of Audi’s all-wheel-drive dominance. The era was also deadly, with spectators and drivers killed, leading to its Group B’s disbandment in 1986. Coming up for auction in Paris is a collection of Group B rally cars that are a who’s who of the era: A mid-engine Ford RS200, Renault 5 Maxi Turbo, MG Metro 6R4, the mid-engine Lancia 037 and Delta S4, and Peugeot 205 Turbo 16. The centerpiece of the collection is the Audi Quattro Sport S1, the legendary icon that brought all-wheel-drive to the masses. Each car will be auctioned individually, with a $4.5 million total estimated price for the lot.
