It’s widely expected that the electric cars of the future will be able to drive themselves. With Continental’s robotic system, they’ll be able to charge themselves, too. Developed in collaboration with startup Volterio, the system consists of two units, one on the garage floor, and one on the underside of the vehicle. They communicate with each other via ultra-broadband radios, automatically adjusting to where the car is parked, and using a physical connection to transfer power much faster than possible wirelessly. Volume production of the charging robot is expected to start in 2024.
