Apple Executive Dan Riccio Now Overseeing VR and AR Headsets [Report]

Former Apple SVP of Hardware Engineering Dan Riccio’s secret new project is working on VR and AR headsets, according to a new report from Bloomberg.

Last month, the Cupertino, California-based technology giant said Riccio was stepping down and being replaced by top lieutenant John Ternus. At the time, Apple said Riccio was shifting to a “new project” without specifying. That new project is overseeing the team developing future Apple AR and VR headsets, said the people, who asked not to be identified discussing internal matters. An Apple spokesman declined to comment.

Although Riccio has ultimate oversight over the headset project, it has been led day-to-day by Mike Rockwell. There’s purportedly well over a thousand engineers working on the headsets.

Notably, Apple has informed staff that its moving the group working on in-house displays and camera technology to Johny Srouji, who is in charge of processors and cellular modems. This suggests Apple could be closer to shipping its first devices with custom mini-LED displays.

Sources says there were signs for months that Apple was making leadership changes in the hardware engineering group. Riccio handed oversight of the electrical engineering, product design, and project management for iPhone and most other major products to John Ternus around March of last year. However, he continued to work on VR and AR, custom screens, and camera hardware.
