In 1986, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the motor car, Mercedes Benz commissioned Andy Warhol to create a series of 80 pictures chronicling the brand’s history from Benz Patent Motor Car to (then) present day. While 80 pictures were planned, the commission ended up being Warhol’s last, with only 36 silk-screen paintings and 13 drawings ever completed. Opening on July 23 at Los Angeles’ Petersen Automotive Museum, “Andy Warhol: Cars – Works from the Mercedes-Benz Art Collection” displays over three dozen of those artworks alongside five of the cars that served as their inspiration; also on display will be the artist’s 1974 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow, which he owned but famously never drove. The exhibition runs through January 22, 2023.
