- The Ford Ranger mid-size truck will get an attractive redesign as seen from these spy photos.
- A leaked photo from 2019 also previewed the new look, which features boxier proportions and a new grille and headlights.
- The 2022 Ranger should launch by the end of the year and go on sale early next.
Ford is revitalizing its pickup-truck lineup, including the new 2021 Ford F-150 (and its upcoming high-performance Raptor and electric variants) and a new compact pickup called the Maverick. The Ranger mid-size pickup will also get a new look, and if it’s anything like what we saw in a leaked photo and these spy shots, it’ll be a more enticing choice in the segment that includes popular choices such as the Jeep Gladiator and Toyota Tacoma. We could even finally get the Ranger Raptor here in the States, too.
A more squared-off front end is the center point of the more attractive look, and the new Ranger will have C-shaped headlights much like the ones on the redesigned F-150. They will likely be connected by two large bars on the grille, though the camouflage in these spy photos Ford does a good job covering up the new Ranger’s face. The overall size looks similar to the current truck, it’s riding on a set of black wheels, and the taillights looks like they’ll be thinner and not as bulky as the current-gen’s.
The new Ranger is expected to keep its turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 270 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. It’s currently rated to tow 7500 pounds with the optional tow package. The current Ranger offers a high-performance Raptor model in other global markets, but in the U.S. we currently have to settle for various off-road packages including the Tremor. The good news is that the new model’s Raptor variant could eventually make its way to the States. It’s rumored to use the 310-hp twin-turbo 2.7-liter V-6 that’s found in the 2021 Bronco off-road SUV.
There should also be improvements to the interior including a larger touchscreen with Ford’s new Sync 4 infotainment system. The current model offers an 8.0-inch touchscreen as an option, while the F-150 can be had with a massive 12.0-inch unit.
We expect that the updated Ranger will launch by the end of 2021 or early in 2022, and it should go on sale in the U.S. as a 2022 model starting under $30,000.
