1964 Porsche 904 GTS Race Car

When it debuted in 1964, the 904 represented a sea change in Porsche’s high-performance race cars. Powered by a flat-four developed from the 356, the 904 featured Porsche’s first ladder-frame chassis with a bonded fiberglass body and fully independent suspension with coilover springs. 108 904s were built to satisfy homologation requirements. The car pictured here was sold to a German owner, before passing to French driver Raymond Touroul who raced the car up until 1972. A restoration in 2000 replaced the original four-cylinder motor with the flat-six fitted to later 904/6s in 1965, and the car was repainted in silver from its original Signal Red. The current owner had the original engine restored, and it was included in the sale.
