In 1960, Porsche unveiled the greatest evolution of the aluminum-bodied Spyder, the car that cemented Porsche’s reputation in motorsport. Powered by the 175 horsepower, four-cam Type 547/3 four-cylinder engine, the R60’s flyweight chassis and powerful brakes made it a fearsome competitor against cars with twice its power. In 1961, Porsche built 14 R61 Spyders as customer cars, identical to the R60. The R61 here, chassis no. 718-076, has a fully documented history since new and was raced successfully in-period. A class win in the FIA World Sportscar Championship in France with the original owner was followed by taking with South African Sports Car Championship in 1964 with the car’s second owner. The R61 arrived in California in the 1970s and raced in historical events throughout the mid-2000s. The car goes to auction via Gooding & Co. at its Amelia Island event later in February.
